Types of curation

There have been several website forms over the years that could be called "curation"

  • Storify, Embedly, (repost.us) Repost.us and other embedding services: Embedding content from one site into another site is a key method for curating stuff from around the web.
  • Aggregation: An individual website might automagically pull items from an RSS feed, posting them to a blog.
  • PlanetPlanet and that ilk: The PlanetPlanet software did the aggregation game, creating a single page website listing recent postings from a group of blogs within the planet. It produced its own RSS feed that was the aggregate of the items from individual feeds.
  • Social sharing (digg, (del.icio.us) del.icio.us, diigo, reddit, etc): A service where people post links, there might be voting or other means to surface the most important links, etc. It can be like watching the waxing and waning interests of the whole of society.
  • Autoblogs: These are a form of aggregation, and are often built using Wordpress plus specific plugins, and are often put together to play SEO tricks with the Internet.
